Getting your head around all the many different saying and terms that are used around the Blackjack table has just been made easier thanks to our Blackjack terminology guide below.
Blackjack - This is both the name of the card game but more importantly it is the name given when either yourself or the Dealer has a hand which consists of an Ace and a Ten valued playing card.
The most common payout for getting such a hand is 3 to 2 unless both yourself and the Dealer are both holding it in which case most games are deemed a push (draw) and your stake are returned.
Hitting - This is the term given when a Player asks the Dealer for another card to be dealt to his hand, he has to ask in turn and this card is dealt free of charge.
You are permitted to hit your initial hand as many times as you wish as long as your hand doesn't go over a total of twenty one, if you do then you have bust.
Standing - This is when you wish to stick with the cards you have been dealt and go for the showdown with the Dealer.
Doubling Down - This is when you opt to buy another card, the value of this purchase has to be the same as your initial wager, so in effect you are doubling the value of your original wager.
Splitting - This is when you split a hand that is either a Pair or two cards that share the same value, I.E. a Ten and a King.
Once you Split the hand you have to place a new wager on the newly formed hand that but be equal to your initial wager on the original hand.
Insurance -
This is a mug bet offered by casinos which has a massive house edge and you are betting that the Dealer has a Blackjack hand (an Ace and a Ten valued card)
Surrender -
There are two types of Surrender the first is Early and the second is Late. This is when you give up your hand for a return of half your initial stake.
Early Surrender is before the Dealer has checked for a Blackjack hand and late is after he has checked whether he is holding a Blackjack hand.
House Edge - This is a thorectical percentage that the Casino is expected to make from the table over the life time of the Blackjack game, the higher the house edge the worse the game is for the Player.
